Consistent nighttime use beyond this period isn’t generally necessary unless advised by your healthcare provider.

It is important to note that the suggestion to use compression after a procedure is just that:  It’s a suggestion.  The published data on the subject is mixed with some analysis showing benefit and other not.  Our experience is that some patients do not find a benefit and thus we do not advise they keep trying.  Some of the data has shown that wearing compression might make the legs feel better in the short term, but it does not improve the long term outcomes after vein procedures.  Thus, we use a patient centered approach where we discuss the pros and cons of compression and let the patient’s decide.  Many of our patients are long time compression stocking users and they go back to using compression as they always have. Some have swelling and use the compression to help the swelling in early recovery.  Then at times there are patients who do not wear them as they have decided after hearing the pros and cons they do not wish to use compression and we support their decision to make that informed decision themselves.

Ideal sleeping positions: Left side and back sleeping

After varicose vein surgery, choosing the right sleeping position can be helpful for a smooth recovery. Sleeping on your back for some can minimizes pressure on the treated veins. To further enhance comfort, place a pillow under or between your knees, which can provide additional support and promote better blood circulation.

Alternatively, sleeping on your left side is also beneficial for lymphatic return. This position might also help distribute pressure more evenly between your hips and legs, aiding in improved blood flow. Elevating your legs while sleeping, irrespective of whether you are on your back or side, can significantly reduce swelling by encouraging proper circulation and lymph fluid flow.

Some patients have told us they avoid sleeping on their stomach. This position could theoretically place pressure on the treated area, potentially interfering with the healing process. It might also, in some cases, lead to strain in your back and neck, adding to overall discomfort.

Instead, one could consider alternative sleeping positions for better recovery. Back sleeping with leg support or side sleeping are effective options. For some patients, we find topical Voltarin can be helpful on over tender areas on the legs after vein treatment.  Some patients feel the areas where the veins were that are healing an be sensitive to the touch and that topical Voltarin can help until that heals and the treated veins fade away under the skin. All of these are over the counter available without a prescription and you should follow the directions or ask the pharmacist or your providers if there are any questions about how to utilizes these approaches.

We advise non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen, or Aleve, or if not tolerated or contradicted, the Tylenol as directed for a few days then if there is still tenderness over specific areas, then topical Voltarin.  Staying informed and adhering to instructions can help promote a smoother healing process and perhaps even better long-term outcomes.
