What is New in Vein Care?
This week, Andrew Jones, MD, a founding partner at Inovia, is in China lecturing and teaching varicose vein treatment techniques in a several city tour that started in Shanghai, China. Part of this stems from our work as investigators in the Veclose Trial.
An update of this important clinical trial was recently in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, Venous and Lymphatics Disorders (September, 2018, Volume 6, pages 606-613). The title of the study was “Twenty-four month results from a randomized trial of cyanoacrylate closure versus radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of incompetent great saphenous veins.” This is one of the largest long term randomized studies of patients seeking varicose vein treatments. This was a study that compared Closurefast to Venaseal. The 24-month complete closure rate was 95.3% in the Venaseal group vs with 94.0% in the Closurefast group, suggesting they have equal outcomes in closing the target vein that contributes to varicose vein symptoms in these patients. Symptoms and quality of life improved similarly in both groups.
No clinically significant device – or procedure-related late adverse events occurred, however. The authors concluded both Venaseal and ClosureFast were effective in closure of the target GSV, resulting in similar and significant improvements in the patient’s quality of life through 24 months. These results suggest that VenaSeal of the GSV is safe and durable out to 2 years. Venaseal patients reported more comfort during the procedure, which is perhaps due to the fact it does not require injections for tumescent anesthesia (the so called non tumescent/non thermal technique, or NTNT ablation). We offer both techniques to our patients, and allow them to choose after hearing about both.
Worldwide Interest in Vein Treatments
A lot of excitement has been generated worldwide about these techniques. This has led vein treatments teams to travel to Inovia in Oregon to observe and learn on site. This includes teams from Europe, South America and Asia, as well as from around the United States. Furthermore, Dr. Jones is often invited to travel to other countries to teach and lecture on these options.
“I sincerely value working with other vein doctors from around the world. I get a lot out of these national and international visits,” said Dr. Jones. “Even though it’s great to teach them as much as I can, I always find I end up learning more. I enjoy to learn how they handle challenging cases or consider newer, cutting edge treatments as they become available.”
