Spider Veins are Often the Easiest Veins to Treat
While spider veins may mean that you don’t like the look of your legs, they’re usually very straightforward to treat. In fact, they’re often less invasive to treat than varicose veins.
Spider veins generally appear when the valve inside the vein isn’t working right. This puts pressure on the small veins in the skin and they become dilated and purple. Instead of only allowing blood to move one way through the valve, blood is allowed to travel back and forth. That can result in blood collecting in that area, and give the vein a purple, blue, or red appearance.
Spider veins are not generally harmful or painful, but they can be a problem cosmetically. The legs are the most common area for these veins to occur.
Sclerotherapy as a Treatment
With the opportunity to view our varicose vein treatment options, you may be considering what to do about your spider veins. Sclerotherapy is a common treatment for spider veins, and one of the best options for anyone who wants to see those unsightly little veins disappear from their legs.
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of an irritant into the vein, which then causes the vein to close up and disappear. It can take some time, and more than one treatment may be required in some cases.
Why It’s Not Really Considered ‘Painful’
Spider veins don’t usually hurt, and sclerotherapy really doesn’t usually hurt that much, either. The injections with small needles may cause some mild discomfort and stinging, but it usually well tolerated by most people. If there’s any reason why your vein doctor doesn’t think you’d be a good candidate for the procedure, that’s something you can talk about during your appointment. But for the majority of patients who have spider veins, the slight discomfort of the injections and feel it is well worth it for getting rid of the spider veins they see in their legs.
