Spider veins generally appear when the valve inside the vein isn’t working right. This puts pressure on the small veins in the skin and they become dilated and purple. Instead of only allowing blood to move one way through the valve, blood is allowed to travel back and forth. That can result in blood collecting in that area, and give the vein a purple, blue, or red appearance.
Spider veins are not generally harmful or painful, but they can be a problem cosmetically. The legs are the most common area for these veins to occur.

But for the majority of patients who have spider veins, the slight discomfort of the injections and feel it is well worth it for getting rid of the spider veins they see in their legs.
