On June 24, 2025, Dr. Todd Jones, a board-certified vein specialist with Inovia Vein Specialty Centers, delivered a continuing education lecture as part of the Oregon Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OANP) MedTalk series. The two-hour, CE-accredited session – titled “Diagnosing and Managing Varicose Veins, Leg Swelling, and Blood Clots” – provided a comprehensive review of venous and lymphatic disorders that frequently affect patients in clinical practice.
Partnering with the Naturopathic Community
The OANP’s MedTalk series brings together providers who are passionate about integrative, patient-centered care. Dr. Jones’ lecture offered valuable insight into the often-overlooked world of vein disease, emphasizing how collaborative, cross-disciplinary care can significantly improve outcomes for patients suffering from leg swelling, varicose veins, lymphedema, and more.
We are grateful to the OANP for the opportunity to engage with such a forward-thinking group of physicians and to raise awareness about chronic venous and lymphatic disorders in our local communities.
Key Clinical Topics Covered
Understanding Lower Extremity Swelling
Dr. Jones began by reviewing the most common causes of leg swelling, outlining how to distinguish between venous insufficiency, lymphedema, and lipedema – three very different yet commonly confused conditions. The lecture provided practical tools to help clinicians recognize the pathophysiological differences and tailor their management approaches accordingly.
Diagnosing and Managing Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a progressive, chronic condition that demands early identification and proper staging. Dr. Jones reviewed clinical signs, diagnostic pathways, and conservative treatment strategies, including compression, manual lymphatic drainage, and when to refer for more advanced therapies.
Recognizing Lipedema
Lipedema is frequently misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema. Dr. Jones offered a practical framework for identifying this painful, fat distribution disorder and discussed its impact on quality of life and mental health stressing the importance of accurate, early diagnosis.
Varicose Veins & Phlebolymphedema
The lecture covered evaluation and treatment of varicose veins and phlebolymphedema – a condition that occurs when chronic venous insufficiency results in secondary lymphatic dysfunction. Dr. Jones presented case examples and reviewed treatment options including compression therapy and minimally invasive in-office vein procedures.
Chronic Venous Ulcers
Dr. Jones shared strategies for managing non-healing leg ulcers, a hallmark of advanced venous disease. He highlighted how Inovia Vein’s Leg Wound Clinics are uniquely equipped to diagnose and treat these complex cases in-house – without the need for multiple outside referrals or tests.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
A major portion of the presentation focused on identifying and managing DVTs, potentially life-threatening clots that require urgent care. Attendees learned how to recognize key symptoms, evaluate risk factors, and navigate treatment pathways including anticoagulation and long-term monitoring.
Advancing Collaborative Vein Care
At Inovia Vein Specialty Centers, we are committed to improving patient outcomes through partnership and education. Dr. Jones’ participation in the OANP MedTalk reflects our broader mission: to bring expert vein care to the forefront of multidisciplinary medicine and to equip providers with the tools they need to better serve their patients.
We thank the Oregon Association of Naturopathic Physicians for hosting this important event and for fostering a spirit of lifelong learning and clinical collaboration.
